Direct from a sold-out season in New York, Nice Fish is the hit new comic play written by Mark Rylance in a unique collaboration with critically-acclaimed Minnesotan contemporary prose poet Louis Jenkins, and directed by Claire van Kampen.
On a frozen Minnesota lake, the ice is beginning to creak and groan. It’s the end of the fishing season and on the frostbitten, unforgiving landscape, two old friends are out on the ice and they are angling for something big; something down there that is pure need, something that, had it the wherewithal, would swallow them whole.
Drawing on Mark Rylance’s own teenage years spent in the frozen winters and culture of the American Midwest, Nice Fish is an ice fishing expedition where the ordinary and extraordinary collide. Ron (Mark Rylance) and Erik (Jim Lichtscheidl) play the odd couple, whose ordinary lives are comically exposed in this sublimely playful, profound and very funny play, joined by Kayli Carter, Bob Davis and Raye Birk, performing at the Harold Pinter theatre this winter.
‘Playful, profound. A hit!’
‘A sizzling hot ticket. Kookily compelling.’
‘Nice Fish proves itself to be that rarest of beasts: a show that sets out to be different and succeeds. Highly entertaining with moments of great profundity.’
‘Beg, borrow or steal a pair of waders and march fishing rod in hand, to the Harold Pinter Theatre’
